How to Take Screenshots (And Crop Them) in Windows 8

I know what you're thinking—taking a screenshot is super simple. While that is partly true, taking of a screenshot of the Start Screen in Windows 8 is little bit tricky, unless you're on your Surface.

The new Windows 8 works in two different realms; the normal desktop mode that we're used to from XP, Vista, and 7, and the Metro-style Start Screen interface geared towards touchscreen devices.

Taking a Screenshot on Your Surface Tablet
If you're on the Surface RT, you can easily take a screenshot of the entire display by holding the Windows button and Volume Up button simultaneously. Fairly simple, like most mobile devices. This works for both the Metro and desktop interfaces, but if you're on your PC, things get a little more complicated...

Taking a Screenshot of Your PC's Desktop
As in older Windows versions, taking a screenshot in desktop mode is quite simple using the Snipping Tool, Microsoft's own screenshot app first introduced in Vista. You can find the Snipping Tool by searching for it from the Start Screen...

Or you an access it directly from the toolbar on the desktop.

When the Snipping Tool is open, you can select a certain area you wish to capture and then edit that image. You can also take a screenshot of the entire screen if you want.

Easy peasy.

Taking a Screenshot of Your PC's Start Screen
Now, if you're on the Start Screen in Windows 8, you will not be able to use the Snipping Tool to take a screenshot. Once Snipping Tool is opened it automatically brings you to the desktop—the application has no compatibility in Metro.

So, to take a screenshot of the Start Screen, you're going to have to kick it old-school, which is pretty much how you do it on the Surface tablet—two buttons.

On the Start Screen, hit the Windows key and the Print Screen key. This will take a screenshot of the entire screen.

Cropping Screenshots on Your Windows 8 PC or Tablet
If you only want a portion of the screenshot, you will have to open up Paint or any other editing program and crop it yourself. Paint is available for both PCs and the Surface.

I only want to have the tiles in the far left column of the above screenshot for my final image. So, just open the image in Paint.

And select the far left column, crop, and save. Pretty easy.

Alternative Cropping Method for Windows 8 PCs
If you're not a Paint fan, you could also open up the screenshot in desktop mode on your PC, which should be saved in Photos by default, and then use the Snipping Tool from there.

These are the easiest ways I know of for capturing a screenshot of your desktop and Metro interface. Again, we can only hope that the next Windows 8 update will provide a better way to take cropped screenshot images, but until then, the above steps should work fine.

Microsoft is preparing to revive the traditional Start button it killed with Windows 8. Sources familiar with Microsoft's plans have revealed to The Verge that Windows 8.1 will include the return of the Start button. We understand that the button will act as a method to simply access the Start Screen, and will not include the traditional Start Menu. The button is said to look near-identical to the existing Windows flag used in the Charm bar.

MICROSOFT CHANGES ITS MIND

Microsoft's change of heart follows another recent planned change for Windows 8.1: a boot to desktop option. We understand Microsoft will add an option to allow users to boot directly to the traditional desktop environment in future builds of the upcoming Windows 8 upgrade. Most internal builds of Windows 8.1 do not include the Start button or boot to desktop options, but Microsoft is said to be planning how to add these into the operating system. ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley previously reported on Microsoft's plans to bring back the Start button and a boot to desktop option.

The death of the traditional Start button in Windows 8 was one of a number of controversial changes introduced with Microsoft's latest operating system. In our review of Windows 8 we called the new navigation changes "a steep learning curve," and feedback on the Start button removal has been mixed. 1.5 million downloads of Pokki, a Start Menu replacement, and other similar tools suggest that Windows 8 users still want the Start button and Start Menu. Microsoft explained away its removal using data it gathered from the company's Customer Experience Improvement Program, but we understand the return in Windows 8.1 is due to customer feedback. We may see the Start button return in the upcoming Windows 8.1 Public Preview, if not expect to see it in the final version due later this year.

Aero Isn’t Gone in Windows 8: (6 Aero Features You Can Still Use)

Many people think Aero is completely gone in Windows 8, but this isn’t true. Microsoft hasn’t helped matters by saying they’ve “moved beyond Aero” in several blog posts. However, hardware acceleration and most Aero features are still present.

Aero is more than Glass. What’s actually gone is the Aero branding and the Aero Glass theme with transparent, blurred window borders. The Flip 3D feature, which wasn’t used by many Windows users, has also been removed.

Hardware Acceleration
Windows 8’s desktop is still hardware-accelerated. Your computer’s graphics hardware (known as the GPU) is used to accelerate the rendering of windows and other interface elements. This speeds up window rendering, taking some of the load off your CPU, and allows for shinier graphical effects.

Microsoft has removed the Aero Glass transparent window borders and replaced them with solid-color window borders, but this isn’t a return to Windows XP’s non-composited desktop. In fact, the desktop taskbar is still transparent.

Window Animations
Aero’s window animations are also still present. The animations that appear when you open, close, minimize, or restore a window function just as they did on Windows 7.

Aero Peek
The Aero Peek feature, which hides windows from view, is also still present. To use Aero Peek, hover your mouse cursor over a taskbar thumbnail or press Alt-Tab and tab to a window. The window you’re hovering over will be displayed and all other windows will be made transparent. The borders around the windows look a bit less glass-like, but this feature functions the same.

You can also hover your cursor over the Show Desktop button on the bottom right corner of your taskbar to preview the desktop itself. If this doesn’t work, right-click your taskbar and select Properties. Check the Use Peek to preview the desktop checkbox. (Note that it’s now referred to as Peek – not Aero Peek, as it’s called on Windows 7.)

Aero Snap
Aero Snap works just as it did on Windows 7. Drag and drop a window’s border to the left or right side of your screen and release it to quickly resize the window and have it take up half of your screen. You can also use the Windows Key+Left Arrow or Windows Key+Right Arrow keyboard shortcut to quickly make a window take up the left or right halves of your screen.

Live Taskbar Thumbnails
Aero’s live taskbar previews are also still present. When you hover over a taskbar icon, you’ll see thumbnails of all its open windows. These aren’t just static previews – they’re updated along with the window itself. If you’re playing a video, you’ll see the video playing in the preview thumbnail. if you’re playing a game, you can watch the game continue to run in the preview.

Aero Shake
The less-commonly-used Aero Shake feature is also still present. To use Aero Shake, grab a window’s title bar with your mouse and shake the window around on-screen. All other windows will automatically minimize themselves. If you grab the window’s boarder and shake it again, the minimized windows will automatically return to their initial positions.

Gone: Flip 3D
The Flip 3D feature introduced in Windows Vista has now been removed. Flip 3D activated an Alt-Tab-like window switcher when you pressed the Windows key and Tab at the same time. With Flip 3D, you “flip” through larger window thumbnails to select an open window.

In Windos 8, Microsoft now uses the Windows Key+Tab hotkey combination for the new switcher, which switches between Modern Windows 8 apps. (The traditional Alt+Tab switcher is still available. it works with both desktop and Modern-style apps.)

Gone: Aero Glass
The Aero Glass feature that offered transparent, glass-like window borders has been removed. It’s not simply off-by-default – Microsoft has removed the code for the blur effect that allowed Aero Glass to work properly.

Instead of the glass-like transparent window borders, the Windows desktop now has solid-color window borders. This is what Microsoft means when they say that Aero has been removed. (The taskbar is still partially transparent, however.)

There’s a way to re-enable transparent window borders and get an Aero Glass-like effect, but it doesn’t work as well as we would hope. The removal of the blur feature means that the window borders will be completely transparent, which can be distracting. There’s also graphical corruption in some situations – Microsoft clearly doesn’t want anyone using Aero Glass anymore.

The good news is that Aero isn’t completely gone in Windows 8 – Microsoft isn’t dragging us back to the Windows XP era by removing all the hardware acceleration and 3D effects. However, Aero Glass – perhaps Aero’s most prominent user-facing feature — is gone.

If you like Aero Glass, this is unfortunate – but if you were worried about Microsoft removing hardware acceleration and Aero’s other features, you can breathe a sigh of relief.

We all know that Search is a must-have feature for any operating system. Since Windows 8 doesn’t have Start Menu, the search has been shifted to Charms Bar or by you can bring it up by pressing Windows Key + Q. New users are sometimes confused by this change, so it would be beneficial for them if they can make a search directly from the context menu of their current directory.

In this article, I’ll tell you the manual way to add the search option to context menus at different locations of your Windows PC using Registry Editor…

Add Search To Context Menus

1. Press Windows Key + R combination on keyboard and type Regedt32.exe in Run dialog box. Press OK.

2. Navigate to following location:

3. In the right pane of this location, create a string with Value Name as Icon and put its Value Data equals to imageres.dll,-177.

Also ensure that there must have 32-bit value for SuppresionPolicy is 80.

4. Repeat step 3 for these locations as well:

6. Repeat the step 5 for this location also:

Those native Windows 8 App tiles look surprisingly good but those that are not don’t look so good. Most of them look so horrible that I had to manually remove them to keep my Start Screen consistent with the same level of taste.

But Start Screen is a place made for placing all kinds of shortcuts in Tile format. It’s just so convenient pinning everything you frequently need on there for easy access. It’s nice that we can make those ugly tiles fancy again. And that’s why this desktop tool Modern Tile Maker is made for. Thanks to the guys at TheWindowsClub for developing it.

You will need to install this tool first before you can start using it. Since it’s not officially signed by Microsoft, you will be getting a UAC warning before you can proceed.

It’s fairly easily to figure out how to use this tool. Simply finish up the settings in the main window, and click Pin to Start button once finished. Everything you need to set to make a pretty tile is all in one place.

You will need to find some quick icon image file in order to make a pretty tile. Google image search usually is your friend for these sort of thing.

During the test, I was able to follow the step to make a pretty looking tile but unfortunately it didn’t look the same, and didn’t not launch the program I associated with, after I pinned the tile to the Start Screen. However, since the tool is developed by the trusted source, I hope it works perfectly well on your computer.
